A Practical Guide To Finding Balance in Life

Life can often feel like a juggling act, with work, family, health, and personal goals all vying for attention. In her insightful Lunch and Learn session, Katie Lamond shared a powerful tool to help us find balance: the Wheel of Life. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed or simply looking for a way to reassess your priorities, this method can offer clarity and actionable steps.

The Wheel of Life: A Snapshot of Your Balance

The Wheel of Life is a simple but effective way to take a snapshot of where you stand across different areas of your life. Picture a wheel divided into eight sections, each representing a key aspect such as health, finances, family, or personal growth. By rating your satisfaction in each area on a scale from 1 to 10, you create a visual representation of your life’s balance—or imbalance.

Katie explained that this exercise isn’t about achieving perfection in every area. Instead, it’s about identifying where you feel fulfilled and where you’d like to make changes. For some, the goal might be improving health or deepening relationships, while for others, it could be carving out time for hobbies or professional development.

Getting Started with Your Wheel

To try this yourself:

  1. Draw a circle and divide it into eight sections. Label each segment with areas of life that matter most to you—these could include career, finances, health, relationships, or spirituality.
  2. Rate your current satisfaction in each area from 1 (not satisfied) to 10 (very satisfied).
  3. Reflect on the results. Are there areas you’d like to improve? Are you spreading yourself too thin in some aspects while neglecting others?

Katie emphasised the importance of personalisation. If "health" feels too broad, break it down into smaller categories like fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness. The key is to make the exercise meaningful to you.

Mapping Your Ideal Balance

Once you've assessed your current balance, think about where you’d like to be. For example, if your health currently rates a 4, what would it take to move it to a 7? The goal isn’t always to reach a perfect 10 but to focus on small, actionable changes that align with your priorities.

Katie shared practical examples, such as scheduling a daily walk to improve physical activity or setting a date night to nurture a relationship. By focusing on three areas at a time, you can avoid feeling overwhelmed and make meaningful progress.

Action Steps and Celebrating Wins

Katie encouraged participants to write down one actionable step for each priority area. The secret to success? Keep it realistic. If hitting the gym three times a week feels daunting, start with a manageable goal, like a short daily walk.

She also highlighted the importance of celebrating small wins. Progress isn’t just about reaching big milestones; it’s about recognising the steps you take along the way. Whether it’s drinking more water or finally booking that overdue family outing, every step counts.

Why Balance Matters

Finding balance isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about creating a life that feels fulfilling and aligned with your values. Katie’s workshop reminded us that while life will never be perfectly balanced, we have the power to adjust and prioritise what truly matters.

As Katie put it, “Balance is about being intentional. It’s about creating a life where you’re in control, rather than life controlling you.”
